Tasks Activity

We give a detailed snapshot of your team’s task flow and delivery behaviour. This guide explains each metric displayed in the Team Activity Panel, including its definition, how it’s calculated, and how leaders and team members can use it to enhance performance and planning.

Task Flow Metrics

1. Throughput

  • Definition: Total number of tasks completed during the selected period.
  • Calculation: Count of tasks marked as completed.
  • Use Case: Helps assess delivery volume. A decrease might signal blockers or misaligned priorities.

2. WIP (Work In Progress)

  • Definition: Number of tasks currently being worked on.
  • Calculation: Count of tasks in active statuses such as “In Development” or “In QA.”
  • Use Case: Monitors team load. High WIP can indicate context switching or overloaded workflows.

3. Assigned Tasks

  • Definition: Number of tasks assigned to individuals within active sprints during the selected period.
  • Calculation: Count of sprint-planned tasks assigned to team members.
  • Use Case: Highlights task distribution. Helps ensure workloads are balanced across team members.

4. Average Member Cycle Time

  • Definition: Mean duration a team member takes to complete a task.
  • Calculation: Average of (Completion Date – Start Date) across completed tasks.
  • Use Case: Benchmarks task delivery speed. High values may suggest inefficiencies or unclear requirements.

5. Average Member WIP Age

  • Definition: Average time tasks have been in progress.
  • Calculation: Average of (Current Date – Start Date) for all ongoing tasks.
  • Use Case: Identifies aging work. Prioritizing older tasks helps maintain steady flow.

Time Tracking Metrics

6. Active Time

  • Definition: Time actively spent working on tasks.
  • Calculation: Sum of working time logged per task.
  • Use Case: Gauges real engagement. Helps ensure time is spent on high-impact work.

7. Waiting Time

  • Definition: Time tasks spent in paused or non-active states, such as “Blocked” or “In Review.”
  • Calculation: Total time in waiting statuses.
  • Use Case: Highlights bottlenecks. Reducing waiting time can speed up overall delivery.

Effort & Planning Metrics

8. Estimated Hours

  • Definition: Estimated time to complete tasks, based on original estimates in Jira or custom PM tool fields.
  • Calculation: Sum of effort estimates across tasks.
  • Use Case: Supports planning and forecast accuracy. Compare with invested hours for continuous improvement.

9. Invested Hours

  • Definition: Actual time logged on tasks, based on Jira tracking fields or custom logging in other tools.
  • Calculation: Sum of all logged hours.
  • Use Case: Provides insight into effort allocation. Useful for performance analysis and budgeting.

10. Story Points

  • Definition: Effort points assigned to completed tasks.
  • Calculation: Total story points from finished tasks.
  • Use Case: Tracks delivery velocity. Assists in planning upcoming sprints.

11. Sprint Efficiency

  • Definition: Percentage of planned tasks completed during a sprint.
  • Calculation: (Completed Planned Tasks ÷ Total Planned Tasks) × 100.
  • Use Case: Measures reliability and sprint commitment. Useful for adjusting sprint scope.

Quality Indicators

12. Reworked Tasks

  • Definition: Tasks that moved backward in the workflow (e.g., from QA to Development), indicating revisions or corrections were needed.
  • Calculation: Count of tasks that transitioned to earlier statuses during their lifecycle.
  • Use Case: Signals quality or requirement issues. High rework rates may indicate lack of clarity or weak review processes.

By understanding and acting on these metrics, leaders can drive smarter planning, reduce inefficiencies, and strengthen team performance. The Tasks Activity panel equips teams with the insights needed to continuously improve delivery outcomes.
